The Sindh police have upgraded security measures in the wake of the recent terrorist attack at the Police Training Centre in Lahore. Security measures at the three police training centres in Karachi, the five police headquarters and the offices of departmental heads have been increased.
Meanwhile, the walls and the gates of the residential area at police headquarters in Garden are in dilapidated condition, even though they were the target of a terrorist attempt a few years ago.
The headquarters in Naval Colony (Malir, Khwaja Ajmer Nagri) are in a similar condition even though weapons are also stored there, sources said, adding that there were several routes to enter the headquarters.
DIG Training and Inspection Ghulam Hyder Jamali said that due to security concerns before the Lahore tragedy, a meeting of senior officers was held and he had moved a summary for the construction of higher walls at Police Training Centres. The government had approved Rs14 million for the construction of training centres and a tender was also made.
DIG Saeedabad Police Training Centre Commander Shaukat Ali Shah, said, meanwhile, that he had beefed up security on the premises after the Lahore tragedy.
He had directed to close two of out three gates at the Centre and only use the main gate which was guarded by four police personnel. Moreover, he had directed the establishment of watch posts on the roof of the Centre on all four sides for 24 hours.
Personnel posted at these posts will be armed with light machine guns (LMGs).
Regarding the Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) branch attached to Police Training Centre, DIG Shah said that as there was a huge presence of vehicle owners on every working day and the job functioned till 4pm. The security of the headquarters was also the responsibility of the Saeedabad Training Department.
He added that very soon a barrier will be installed at the entry points of Police Training Centre Saeedabad and the MVI Branch for security purposes. Moreover, he directed the security personnel performing their duty at the gate of the PTC to thoroughly check vehicles and people wanting to enter the centre.
