The fire moved quickly through the building because of an open central section that served as an airwell, according to an architect close to the project. The airwell supplied the flames with lots of oxygen, allowing them to spread throughout the structure.

Fireworks for Chinese New Year celebrations set off by CCTV staff caused the blaze in the 5 billion yuan building. CCTV declined to comment on the news to ASR.

However a statement on CCTV’s website read: “We feel very hurt that the fire caused a big loss of national wealth.. We apologise to the nearby people for the traffic jams and inconvenience caused by the fire.”
