“We will start building a centralised nationwide database of Indian residents using the best technology, including biometrics,” said Nandan Milekani, who has just been appointed as Chairman of UIAI on 9 July 2009.

Biometrics gives each citizen a unique identifier and allows the government to easily verify whether someone is who they claim to be.

UIAI will first create a national authentication and identity system. This basic infrastructure will allow central and state governments to build “value added applications” on top of the system.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced last month that an initial fund of Rs 100 crore (US$20.3 million) has been allocated to this project.
