Indonesia has tightened immigration control by adding 15 countries onto its high-risk list.
The new addition includes Pakistan and Nigeria, which have had close relationships with Indonesia in the past. They are considered high risk because they allow citizens from neighbouring countries to use their nationalities’ passports to travel.
According to Maroloan Baringbing, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Immigration Department, passports from these two countries are often misused.
Another source from the immigration office said that Afghan nationals frequently use Pakistani passports to enter Indonesia with an aim to illegally get into Australia.
Citizens from these high-risk countries would be required to go through stringent immigration checks and be screened by intelligence agencies.
Visas will only be approved after the applicant receives clearance from 14 different government agencies. Agencies include the country’s intelligence agency Badan Intelijen Negara, the Armed Forces Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) and the Foreign Ministry of Indonesia.
The news comes as six people were killed by a bomb blast in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, today (Friday 17th July).
