Singapore’s homeland security forces have been “stress tested” by a simulated terrorist attack similar to last November’s attacks on Mumbai, India’s commercial capital.
The Northstar VII exercise saw a band of 15 “terrorists” hijack a marine vessel and infiltrate Singapore’s shores at different landing sites, beseiging the city in two phases for several days.
Three other test scenarios - portraying terrorist strikes at the busy Raffles Place MRT subway station, the shopping mall VivoCity, and Rasa Sentosa Resort Hotel – were also carried out.
The excercise was designed to raise public awareness, boost public confidence and test and showcase the readiness and inter-agency coordination of the emergency response forces.
Northstar VII was led by the Singapore Police Force, and involved fifteen government agencies including the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Land Transport Authority.
It also saw the involvement of 2000 additional participants, 350 role players and the use of thunderflashes and pyrotechnics.
