India’s newly elected President has declared that homeland security will be a top priority for the new government.
The United Progressive Alliance government, led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will focus on strengthening internal security and take a zero-tolerance stance on terrorism, said President Pratibha Patil at his inaugural address to parliament.
A detailed plan to address security challenges is in the pipeline and will be implemented in a time-bound manner. Besides setting up a national counter-terrorism centre, special forces and quick response teams will be formed and deployed in vulnerable areas.
According to Patil, India’s intelligence system will be strengthened. Intelligence and information sharing will be facilitated by a multi-agency centre and further enhanced by a new net-centric information command structure. The government is also committed to equipping its police forces and intelligence agencies with the state-of-the-art technology and advanced training methods.
The National Investigation Agency, a new federal agency created after the Mumbai attack terrorist attacks in November last year, will be empowered to handle terror-related crimes across states.
