Singapore law enforcers to use wireless stun-guns

Law enforcers in Singapore are adopting “Buck Rogers-style” wireless Taser stun-guns in response to the rising threat of petty and violent crime amid one of the worst recessions to hit the city-state.

The escalating threat of global terrorism is another reason Singaporean authorities will be using the non-lethal weapons, which are being distributed by the local firm Trussco.

Taser guns, which first came into existence in the US in the early 1990s, use neuro-muscular incapacitation (NMI) technology to stop – but not kill – offenders.

The Singapore Police Force has used stun-gun technology for some time, but has not until now used wireless models.

The last murder suspect shot and killed by Singaporean police was a year ago. A man who had earlier stabbed an odd-job worker at a hawker centre, was shot by police at Outram Park MRT, drawing criticism among the local blogging community for the use of excessive force.
