India reviews security at South Asian embassies

India has announced a large-scale security review of its embassies in South Asia following threats against Indian nationals in Afghanistan.

Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence Bureau and the counter-terrorism unit National Security Guard will travel to Afghan capital Kabul to assess the security levels of the Indian embassy there.

Indian embassies in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will see similar reviews conducted, while a paramilitary unit has already been sent to Pakistan to protect India’s top diplomats in the wake of November’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

India’s embassy in Kabul was attacked by a suicide bomber in July last year, killing a number of people including Indian diplomats and security guards.
