London is adopting a “partnership approach” to security in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics, engaging local businesses and security professionals through the counter-terrorism initiative ‘Project Griffin’.
Alex Robertson, Chief Superintendent of the City of London Police, told delegates at the Global Security Asia conference in Singapore today (Tuesday 17th March) that more than 9000 security professionals had been given counter-terrorism training through Project Griffin.
“We need trusted partners. You can’t expect security and emergency services to defeat terrorism alone,” he said.
The Olympic Park is being designed with “terrorism in mind”, he added. Stadia had been built so that vehicles were unable to get too close. Biometrics were also being used to alert the authorities to certain targets.
“The idea is that the public is alerted to the concerns of terrorism, but not alarmed by it,” he said.
