NEC is showcasing its new range of facial recognition technology at the Global Security Asia exhibition in Singapore, including a facial recognition system with live video security intelligence. However Sunny Ho, Regional Sales Director, admitted that the new technology is not “foolproof”.

The technology works by recognising facial features such as the eyes, nose and mouth. It then matches a person’s picture to a database of jpeg images captured from a live video feed placed strategically in buildings or airports. However, NEC’s facial recognition will fail on full jihab-wearers and those who’ve had plastic surgery.

Otherwise, as long as the eyes, nose and mouth can be captured on the live feed, a few clicks can perform a one-to-one or a one-to-many facial search.

Ho added that this technology is better used in tandem with other biometrics solutions such as fingerprinting and iris recognition.
