Singapore: dirty bomb poses major threat

The threat from terrorists of a ‘dirty bomb’ is a great concern for Singapore, a senior official from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) warned delegates at the Global Security Asia conference yesterday (Wednesday 18 March).

Speaking about the force’s preparation for radiological incidents, Peter Lim, the Deputy Commissioner of the SCDF said that it is easy for terrorists to obtain radiological material and explosives.

“The risk of radiological incidents in Singapore can come from a sabotaged facility – or theft,” said Lim. “Such new emerging threats pose as a great concern for us.”

Singapore’s preparation for radiological threats—known as dirty bombs—consists of an array of policies and technology. The SCDF’s decontamination vehicle can attend to 60 walking patients, and 10 incapacitated patients in one hour.

SCDF works as the incident manager for civil emergencies and leads multi-agency efforts in managing or limiting a disaster,” says Lim.
