Australia to boost airport police presence

The Australian Government is expected to fill in the estimated 35 per cent shortfall in airport police numbers in its latest budget, which will be announced on May 12.

The 35 per cent figure was claimed by Police Federation of Australia, a trade union, which compared the number of police officers actually on duty with a 2005 target set by the authorities, following a major airport security review.

According to the budget, the A$80 million (US$59 million) funding on airport security will provide police a more visible presence at some of the major airports. New police and other security facilities will also be built at these terminals.

Airport security in Australia has been under intense criticism since the brawl between rival gangs left one dead at the check-in area of the country’s busiest airport in March. It is believed that the brawl fast-tracked the government funding on airport security.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty and Attorney-General Robert McClelland pledged to review the police response following criticism officers were too slow to respond.
